French businesses took on workers at the fastest rate in nearly 10 years, according to new data.

IHS Markit said that although French business activity slowed to a reading of 55.3 in June compared to 56.9 in the previous month, firms expanded their payrolls at the quickest pace since August 2008.

IHS Markit chief economist Chris Williamson, said: “The strength of job creation very much suggests that companies are in expansion mode and moving away from focusing on cost efficiencies.”

He said he expected France – Europe’s second largest economy – to expand by 1.5% for this year, which would be the strongest growth since 2011.
