Humanitarian initiative delivers more than 100 hospital beds and stretchers to Ghana
A visit to a hospital in Kumasi has evolved into a humanitarian initiative bringing much-needed medical equipment and hope to patients in Ghana.
The initiative began after a 2025 visit to Ghana by Andrea Saul, affectionately known as Evangelist Princess and Lion Andrea, who travelled with fellow Lion Nana Osei Mensah to attend a family funeral. Both are members of Etobicoke Alpha Lions Club, a global membership organization with more than 1.5 million members worldwide founded in 1917 by the late Melville Jones, Visioneer.
During their visit, they joined fellow members of the Kumasi Royal Lions Club on a service project at the Pediatric Wing of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital.
What they witnessed left a lasting impression: a shortage of hospital beds and essential medical equipment. Rather than allowing the experience to remain a memory, Lion Andrea and Lion Nana Osei returned to Canada determined to take action.
That determination has resulted in the collection of more than 100 hospital beds and stretchers, along with towels, bed sheets, pillowcases, blood pressure monitors, recycled eyeglasses and other healthcare supplies.
Two 40-foot shipping containers packed with the donations have since been shipped to the Ministry of Health and Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Kumasi.
For the organizers, the shipment represents far more than equipment. A hospital bed can mean dignity, comfort and timely access to care. Behind every bed is a patient, a family and a story.
The initiative demonstrates what is possible when communities unite across borders. It has received support from community members, healthcare partners, donors, volunteers and organizations, including the El’VateED Foundation.
A notable part of the fundraising effort was the contribution of Chartered President of Etobicoke Alpha Lions Club Immediate Past President Lion Kwame Frempong, who helped create a GoFundMe page to support the initiative and provide another avenue through which individuals and members of the wider community could contribute to the humanitarian effort.
The organizers are also working to expand the initiative among Ghanaian communities in Canada and Ghana, with support from Nana Felicia Botchway, GCAO Seniors Wing Leader and Executive Member, Lion Osei Gyamfi, owner of Castlemore Hotel, Kumasi and Richmond Bonsu, President of GhanaFest.
The combined efforts of these individuals, organizations, donors and community members underscore an important reality: initiatives of this scale cannot be sustained by one person or one organization alone. They require a community willing to contribute resources, connections, time and financial support.
While the arrival of the containers mark a significant milestone, the organizers say the need remains urgent. Continued support from individuals, businesses, community organizations, foundations and healthcare partners will be essential if similar initiatives are to reach more hospitals and communities across Ghana.
This is not simply a story about 100 hospital beds.
It is about people who witnessed a need, refused to look away and turned compassion into action.
It is about a community in Canada extending its hands across the Atlantic to support patients and healthcare workers in Ghana.
And it is a reminder that even something as ordinary as a hospital bed can become a powerful symbol of dignity, care and hope when people come together to provide it.
As the equipment reaches Ghanaian healthcare facilities, it carries the generosity of donors, the commitment of volunteers and the hope of communities working together across continents.
