MISSISSAUGA, ONTARIO — October 3, 2026 — The Ghanaian-Canadian Association of Ontario (GCAO) brought together community leaders, dignitaries, professionals, families and supporters for a special Ghanaian-Canadian Heritage and Resource Centre Fundraising Gala, an evening dedicated to culture, community and building a stronger future.

Held at the Verdi Convention Center in Mississauga, the gala highlighted the growing importance of preserving Ghanaian heritage while creating resources and opportunities that can serve generations of Ghanaian-Canadians across Ontario.

Under the GCAO’s powerful motto, “Together We Build,” the fundraising initiative reflects a broader vision: creating a lasting institution that celebrates Ghanaian history, supports the community and provides a central place where culture, education, heritage and community development can come together.

A Night of Leadership and Community

The evening featured an impressive lineup of distinguished guests and community figures.

The Guest of Honour was the Right Honourable Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, Speaker of the Parliament of Ghana, whose presence added significant importance to the occasion and underscored the strong relationship between Ghana and its diaspora in Canada.

Special guests included Mayor Patrick Brown, Her Excellency Francisca Dora Edu-Buandoh, and The Honourable Quayson, alongside other community leaders and supporters.

Their participation demonstrated the importance of collaboration between government, community organizations, cultural institutions and individuals in advancing initiatives that benefit the Ghanaian-Canadian community.

Building a Ghanaian-Canadian Heritage and Resource Centre

At the heart of the gala was a vision that extends far beyond a single evening.

The proposed Ghanaian-Canadian Heritage and Resource Centre represents an opportunity to establish a permanent platform for preserving Ghanaian heritage and making it accessible to future generations.

Such a centre can become a place where young Ghanaian-Canadians learn about their history, where families celebrate their traditions, where researchers and students can access cultural resources, and where the wider Canadian community can experience and appreciate Ghana’s rich contribution to Canada’s multicultural landscape.

From Ghanaian history and traditional culture to arts, music, language, food and community stories, the centre can help ensure that important parts of the Ghanaian-Canadian experience are documented and preserved.

Preserving Culture While Looking Ahead

For many immigrant communities, preserving heritage is about more than remembering the past. It is about giving young people a sense of identity and belonging while creating opportunities for them to participate confidently in Canada’s future.

The Ghanaian-Canadian community has made significant contributions to Ontario in business, healthcare, education, politics, professional services, arts, culture, sports and community development.

A permanent heritage and resource centre could provide a home for these stories.

It could also serve as a bridge between generations — connecting elders who carry valuable historical knowledge with young people who will become the next generation of Ghanaian-Canadian leaders.

An Evening of Culture, Community and Impact

The gala’s message was captured in three simple words:

Culture. Community. Impact.

The event was not simply about fundraising. It was about encouraging members of the community to take ownership of their heritage and participate in building something that can have a lasting impact.

The GCAO’s message is particularly relevant at a time when Ghanaian communities across Ontario continue to grow and become increasingly active in Canada’s social, economic and cultural landscape.

Building strong community institutions requires collective effort. It requires individuals, businesses, organizations, professionals and community leaders to contribute their resources, expertise, networks and ideas.

By investing in heritage today, the community can help ensure that future generations will not only know where they came from but will also understand the sacrifices, achievements and contributions that shaped the Ghanaian-Canadian experience.

“Together We Build”

The Ghanaian-Canadian Association of Ontario’s slogan, “Together We Build,” captures the spirit behind the fundraising campaign.

No single person can build a lasting community institution alone. It requires collaboration.

It requires donors, volunteers, businesses, professionals, community organizations, government partners and everyday members of the community coming together around a shared vision.

The Heritage and Resource Centre can become more than a building. It can become a symbol of Ghanaian-Canadian identity, achievement, resilience and unity.

As Ghanaian-Canadians continue to make their mark across Ontario and throughout Canada, preserving their heritage while investing in the future has never been more important.

The October 3 gala therefore represented more than an evening of celebration. It was part of a larger conversation about who we are, what we preserve, what we build and what we leave behind for the next generation.

Together We Build. Together We Preserve. Together We Create a Legacy.

The Ghanaian-Canadian Association of Ontario continues to champion a vision in which Ghanaian heritage remains vibrant, accessible and proudly connected to Canada’s multicultural future.A Night Filled With Entertainment and Energy

The evening was brought to life by an outstanding team of hosts and entertainers. MC’s, Miss Anna Aidoo and Mr. Agyekum kept the atmosphere vibrant, engaging guests throughout the night and helping make the gala a truly memorable celebration.

Their energy, professionalism and ability to connect with the audience added a special dimension to an already significant evening. From the formal proceedings to the moments of celebration, guests were treated to an atmosphere filled with excitement, pride and community spirit.

Strong Media Presence Captures the Occasion

The importance of the gala was also reflected in the strong presence of Ghanaian and African media organizations that came out to document and amplify the event.

Among the media organizations represented were Afrolive FM, GhanaLive News, Ghanaian News Canada, Kofi Asem Photography, Alive TV, Vince Media, and other media professionals.

Their coverage helped bring the story beyond the walls of the Verdi Convention Center, giving audiences across the GTA, Canada and the wider Ghanaian diaspora an opportunity to experience the celebration and learn more about the vision behind the Ghanaian-Canadian Heritage and Resource Centre.

The presence of these media platforms was particularly important because community events of this magnitude deserve to be documented, shared and preserved. Through photography, television, digital broadcasting and online journalism, these media organizations are helping tell the evolving story of Ghanaian-Canadians and their contributions to Canadian society.

More Than a Gala

With distinguished guests, passionate community members, exceptional entertainment and strong media coverage, the October 3 fundraising gala demonstrated what can happen when a community comes together around a shared vision.

It was an evening of heritage, leadership, entertainment, media and community pride — but most importantly, it was an investment in the future.

The message was clear: Together We Build.
