Motor rider shot in Nkwanta conflict struggle for transfer due to ambulance shortage

Motor rider Bright Nkpah is fighting for his life after being shot on the Odomi–Challah road but it’s the lack of an ambulance that’s made his ordeal worse.

Adom News reported on May 22, 2026, that the 26-year-old was wounded on May 2 during renewed clashes in Nkwanta South, Oti Region and had to be moved to Accra for specialist care without a working ambulance in the municipality.

“Nkwanta South—despite facing recurring conflict and heightened security concerns—does not have a dedicated, reliable ambulance for emergency referrals,” the report stated.

Nkpah first got emergency treatment at Nkwanta St Joseph Catholic Hospital before doctors referred him to the 37 Military Hospital. But with no ambulance available locally, officials had to call Worawora for help.

That vehicle was barely roadworthy, with a weak engine that struggled on the rough stretch to Worawora, where Nkpah was switched to a second ambulance for the trip to Accra.

The rough, delayed transfer left him in more pain than necessary.

Health workers and residents say the incident exposes a gap the Ghana National Ambulance Service can’t keep ignoring.

“The situation underscores the urgent need for the Ghana National Ambulance Service to prioritise the municipality with a fully functioning ambulance, given the frequent emergencies associated with both road incidents and ongoing unrest,” they (health workers and residents) said.

The problem isn’t just Nkwanta. Adom News found that only 2 of Oti Region’s 9 districts have working ambulances. The rest are grounded.

Meanwhile, residents say every hour lost on the road is a risk to life, especially in a conflict-prone area where injuries can happen without warning.

They’re pushing both regional and national authorities to act before the next emergency turns fatal.
