Leading member of Dr Mahamudu Bawumia’s campaign team, Nana Akomea, has urged the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to consider reaching out to Alan Kyerematen as part of efforts to reunite the party and strengthen its electoral prospects.
According to a report by adomonline.com on May 13, 2026, Akomea said he would strongly support any attempt by Dr Bawumia to reconcile with the former Trade Minister if consulted.
“If I’m one of his advisers, if he asks me, I will say yes,” he stated.
He explained that the NPP’s efforts to attract supporters from the National Democratic Congress and independent voters should begin with former members who already have longstanding ties to the party.
Akomea described individuals who left the NPP as part of the party’s “natural constituencies,” arguing that many departures were the result of misunderstandings and hurt feelings that may have eased over time.

“Basically, these people left because of some hurt feelings or misunderstanding. With the passage of time, you can bring them back,” he indicated.
Responding to a direct question on whether the time was right to approach Kyerematen, Akomea answered in the affirmative.
“And if he’s approached and he wants to come back, all the better for the party,” he added.
Although he said the issue had not been discussed personally with Dr Bawumia, Akomea maintained that he would recommend the move if asked.
“He hasn’t discussed it with me. But if he discusses it with me as part of his inner circle, I would advise it,” he stated.
Akomea stressed that if the NPP is prepared to win over supporters of rival parties, then reconciling with former loyalists should be a natural step in rebuilding party unity ahead of the next election.
